NEWS // Technika Smartbox 8320HD Freeview Recorder
In the last few days Tesco have announced that they will begin selling Technika branded Smartbox 8320HD recorders. This box pretty much does everything that other HD Recorders can do plus a lot more on top. The added benefit is that because of the exclusive deal with Tesco this HD Recorder will be significantly cheaper, even more so when you look at all the features that the Technika Smartbox 8320HD comes with. If you get a cheap LCD TV along with the Technika Smartbox you can have a full HD setup for less than the cost of a 12 month SKy or Virgin package.
Review
Technika as we all know is just Tesco's own brand of electrical equipment. in 99% of cases the products are manufactured by 3rd partys and simply re-branded for Tesco. The Technika Smartbox 8320HD is no exception and is designed and built by a company called IP Vision. Tesco are clearly trying to copntrol the budget end of the Freeview HD Recorder market with this excellent box. However, we believe that they have hit the jackpot with this one and it will appeal to a much wider audience.
The Smartbox 8320HD has a 320GB built in hard drive with twin Freeview HD tuners (not 832Gb as you may have expected from the name). The Technika Smartbox 8320HD offers HD upscaling meaning that you can watch non-HD channel is a digitally enhanced mode to make them clearer and better quality (but NOT HD quality). With this box you also get all the usual features liKe pause, record and rewind live TV, series link, 8-day on screen EPG.

We only know a limited amount about the product at the moment as ICECRYPT are still finalising the features for ICECRYPT T2400 Freeview HD Recorder. Recorders Rollling out in UK
There are now a wide range of Freeview HD Recording Boxes on the market. Most of the larger HD electronics manufacturers have now released their HDD / PVR model and in general the feedback about the latest HD REcorders is very good.
The quality of even the cheaper HD Freeview hard disk recorders is very good. Considering HD is only a relatively new development (Particularly HD Freeview), the Freeview HD Recorder seems to work well and we haven't had a influx of complaints or negative reviews about any freeview playback recorder in particular.
Looking at the other end of the spectrum with HD Freeview Recorder manufacturers like Sagem, Panasonic, 3View, Sony and Sharp the standard is exceptional. There were question marks around how quickly manufacturers would be able to create HD (High Definition) electrical devices with a built in hard drive and twin tuner freeview recorders but the uptake has been fantastic.
It is now estimated that over 1 million UK residents can receive Freeview HD and that for Christmas 2010 the must have household item will be a Freeview HD Recorder. HD Freeview (or Freeview+) is definitly the next big thing.
Since Freeveiw HD has been advertised on National TV in the Uk, the demand for Freeview HD Boxes and Freeview HD Receivers has gone through the roof. It seems that more people than ever are interested in HD and want to find out more information about how they can get HD in their home. The future is clear, the future is HD.
Now that Humax have announced their new HD Freeview PVR, interest in the industry has been boosted. As manufacturers rush to be the first to release a 1TB (1 Terrabit) Freeview HD playback recorder, there are also smaller manufacturers who are releasing their version of a Freeview HDD Recorder.
It is now standard to have at least a single USB port in the box, allowing data transfer and upgradeability in the future. A must have these days is the twin tuner in the freeview recorders specification as well as a Ethernet (or USB) port for connectivity to interactive services such as YouTube, BBC iPLayer etc. You will also want to check for HDMI and that a scart socket is included. Prices for these recorders are falling rapidly so make sure you check around for the best bargains. There are so many different recorders on the market that everyone can find their perfect PVR. Look out for special offers on big name freeview+ recorders and PVR boxes in the build up to the world cup 2010.

Latest News // TVoincs Freeview HD Recorder
In the world of Freeview, Freeview HD Boxes and the HD Freeview Recorder, TVonics are a well known brand. Over the years they have become a trusted name and built up a reputation for high quality Freeview HD Recorders at at an affordable price.
The Freeview HD Recorder market is only just taking off but there are now several Freeview HD Boxes available to buy. For this reason at Freeview HD Reccorder .com we are quite surprised that TVonics have not brought out their first Freeview HD Box, never mind a Freeview HD Recorder which is seen as a more advanced piece opf electrical equipment.
However, despite their being no official word from TVonics, we are expecting that they will release their first Freeview HD Box in time for the 2010 world cup. At the moment in time we do not know if they will jump in at the deep end and release a Freeview HD Recorder (skipping the Freeview HD Box / receiver step).
Given how quickly the Freeveiw HD Recorder market is developing this may be what TVonics are doing and the reason for the delay. The difference between a Freeview HD Box and a Freeview HD Recorder would be that the Recorder has a built in hard drive memory and the ability to record all the Freeview channels onto its internal hard drive for viewing at a later date. They also allow for the pausing and rewinding of live TV.

Freeview HD Recorder Buyers Guide
So what is a Freeview HD Recorder and what is Freeview+, Freeview Plus and Freeview Playback?
This is a common question which has a very simple answer. A Freeview HD Recorder, Freeview +, Freeview Plus and Freeview Playback are all pretty much the same thing. Whilst the technology behind each of these Freeview HD Recorder related terms may ever so slightly different essentially they are all a method of receiving Freeview HD channels, viewing Freeview HD Channels and use a hard drive memory to enable tape-less recording of the full range of digital Freeview HD TV channels. More from the Freeview HD Recorder Buyers Guide.
What is a Freeview HD Recorder?
A Freeview HD Recorder is very similar to a regular Freeview HD Box. The main difference is that with a Freeview HD Recorder is is comes with an integrated hard drive memory (usually 200GB+) and has an in-built recording function. It is important to note that not all Freeview HD Boxes can record - Make sure you check before you buy.
We would definitly reccomend buying a HD Freeview Recorder that contains a twin tuner. A Freeview HD Recorder with a twin tuner will allow you to watch one channel whilst recording a different channel. Some Freeview HD Recorders will even have the facility to record two seperate Freeview channels at the same time whilst watching a third! Some of the more advanced recorders will make use of the fantastic new "series link" scheduling option. This allows you to record every episode of your favourite series automatically, keeping track of any schedule changes, and making sure you avoid repeats. so you can record every episode of your favourity TV series at the touch of a button.
Currently there is little information about which Freeview HD Recorders will be availiable and their features. We are unsure if they will all have Ethernet and USB posts to enable interactive services when they become availiable. We will update you on this as soon as the infomration is availiable.
What are the Benefits of a Freeview HD Recorder
If you compare a Freeview HD Recorder to a standard Freeview+ Box you will see that the recorder option is much better for several reasons:
- You are able to Watch a particular TV channel while simultaniously recording a second channel onto the hard drive memory
- You can record two TV channels at the same time. So if two programs are on at the same time, using your Freeview HD Recorder you can record both of them. More advanced Freeview HD Recorders also allow you to watch a pre-recorded program while recording two.
- Using the in built EPG (Electronic Program Guide) you can easily browse and search through the TV Guide. The Freeview HD Recorder allows you to record a single program or a series with the click of a button.
- Ability to transfer and burn recorded programs off the memory of your Freeview HD Recorder and save them onto a DVD. It is expected that in the near future Freeview HD Recorders will be able to burn data onto blue-ray disks.
- Follow a TV series or Series of Programs - Some Freeview HD Recorders will incorporate a 'Series link' button. This allows you to select a TV series to record at the click of a button. This automatically monitors any schedule changes or delays and will adjust ytour recordings automatically.
- Freeview HD Recorders allow you to Pause or Freeze live TV and HD TV. This is really handy if you want to make a brew or if someone comes to the door.
- reeview HD Recorders have the ability to rewind live TV and HD TV. If you want to watch a great clip again or if you blinked and missed it, don't worry, you can just rewind the program and watch it again.

Samsung BD-C8200M Freeveiw HD Recorders Review
The Samsung BD-C8200 Blu Ray Disc Player is a Freeview Recorder (HD Compatible) with a 250Gb HDD (hard disk drive). The Samsung BD-C8200 is a fantastic Freeview HD Recorder and one of the first to incorporate a Blu-Ray Player. This is one Freeview HD Recorde that is perfect for the living room, the bedroom or even the office.
The Samsung BD-C8200 Blu Ray Disc Player makes use of 1080p DVD Up-scaling and this Blu-Ray Player is the latest in Samsung's new range of Freeview HD Recorders. Samsung are clearly looking at their Blu-Ray Players and making them take advantage of the recent advancements in Freeview HD technology. When you actually come to use this Freeview HD Recorder one of the first things you'll notice is the speed it works at. Historically, not just with Samsung products, Blu Ray players are renowned for having a slow boot up time (or load time) when you compare it to regular DVD Players.

Alba ALDTR160 Freeview Recorder Review (NOT HD)
The Alba ALDTR160 is one of the Recorders reccomended by the official freeview.co.uk website. The Alba ALDTR160 represents one of the cheapest hd recorders on the market whilst still being a fairly advanced piece of equipment. As you might expect with a cheap box, the Alba ALDTR160 doesn't have all the bells and whistles thatthe more expensive options have but if you want a simple and functional hd recorder then this is a fantastic option.
Features of the Alba ALDTR160 are its twin tuners, a medium sized 160GB hard disk drive iving around 80 hours of recordable program time. Whilst this is not as much as other recorders, if you keep the memory clean then its plenty of recording time. One of the biggest plus points of the Alba ALDTR160 it that it is very simple to setup and use. The DTR is also really simple to get up and running. Other features include the one click auto set-up option and the ability to auto-scan for new channels as they are switched on. Obviously this includes standard Freeview and Freeview HD channels. In terms of useage, a 7 day EPG, now & next function make channel hopping clear and easy. You can connect other appliances to the Alba ALDTR160 via 2 SCART sockets but there is no Ethernet port.

Goodmans and Grundig Freeview HD Box (NOT Recorder)
Grundig and Goodmans are the next of the big HD box manufacturers to announce that they will be releasing a Freeview HD box before the start of the World Cup in June 2010. Both manufacturers ahve no plans to release a Freeview HD Recorder which is very surprising and puts them at a significant disadvantage.
By the time the world cup starts in June 2010, it is estimated that around 50% of all UK homes will have the option to receive Freeview HD (ie. The Freeview HD signal will be transmitted to 50% of the UK population). All those people who previously purchased a HD Ready TV but have only ever been able to watch standard TV channels will be able to watch the football channels on the following TV channels: BBC HD Freeview, ITV HD Freeview, and Channel 4 HD Freeview. In the short terms Five HD will not be transmitting via Freeview and will only be available via Sky.
